The wind is rushing through the trees, sounding like a freight train. We've a foot or more of snow on the ground, and it just keeps falling. The power has blinked several times so I've run the heat up to an unprecedented 68°F so that in case we lose electricity the house may stay somewhat warm until it is restored. Nemo is, as predicted, a massive storm. Locals compare this to the  "Blizzard of 1978:" I prefer to remember our 1968 blizzard instead as it sounded just like this one does!

In 1968 I had a poetry assignment where we had to assemble anthologies of favorite poets' works. Among my choices was Emerson's The Snow-Storm. It's a pretty piece, and it's where I first encountered the word maugre. I never use the word, but I remember Emerson's farmer on those rare occasions I see it in print. I wish I still had that folder I submitted: I drew a nice picture to go with the poem.

Maybe I can post some snow pics tomorrow, and catch up on reading friends' journals. That will be after we shovel out the anticipated 24" of snow.

So far, so good... I've cleared a path and area for the dogs to use, cleared the front steps, and settled in with coffee and pop-tarts (and naproxen and a heating pad...). I'll venture out again in a bit.

I'm not about to venture outside to take any measurements. It's snowing horizontally here in Disgusta, ME with gusts to 50mph (80kmph) and I can barely make out the street light one street over. We had 8 inches (20cm) last night when I went to clear the pre-storm just before we started to get the brunt of this nor'easter. I'm sure we have at least a foot now. Public reports into our local National Weather Service office indicate that as of 5am, Gorham (just west/inland from Portland) is the bulls-eye so far with 31 inches (81cm) of snow.

I refuse to use the name coined by the Weather Channel. I meteorologist in me thinks it's a disservice to the public and could cause confusion. I'd love to see the Disney Lawyers go after them due to all the resulting "Finding Nemo" jokes that are traveling over the Internet.

Nemo was an odd name and the NWS explained their reasoning somewhere out there.

Stay safe! We've still got power, unlike many in my State. I estimate around 20" at the back of the house, and there are drifts everywhere from the winds. It's still snowing and blowing.

Hope you'll all be OK there!

Thank you! So far things are manageable, though I'm out-of-shape and shoveling will be tediously slow. The home where my mom is must be on generators, looking at the power outage maps. My wife should be alright, though, and even has wi-fi still.
