Violet's gone

The wayward fox has taken one of the rabbits. I saw this, the silhouetted form of the fox emerging from behind some trees with something rabbit-looking hanging from its mouth. Moments earlier we were watching the fox cross among the shrubs and shadows, and it stopped to rummage in some bushes... I went out to the area later on and there were definite signs of a struggle in the snow. So it goes.

I do not want to appear callous, I just have to remind myself that this is the way of the world. There had been a rabbit in the fenced part of the yard earlier in the morning and the dog didn't see it right away. I watched it for a bit, standing stock still as The Huntress sniffed about, and then the chase was on. I wonder if this was the same little bunny :o(

*sigh* I even made some bad jokes later, that either the fox would appear dragging a deer next, or vice versa. And then came a trio of hawks, gliding above, and while thinking "Ride of the Valkyries" I imagined them hauling off one of the deer as well.

Now I have an urge to sing "Circle of Life"

Right? I was humming it as I perused the crime scene.

Poor bunny - happy fox.

Incidentally, tonight leaving for my night shift I saw a fox taking off from our garden. A big one. So now I suppose s/he's the one who's been leaving pawprints on snow all winter and shitting around the garden since the autumn... Some years ago there was a leveret in our garden who sadly lived just a couple of days before s/he was eaten and hindlegs left behind :( Not sure if neighbor's cat or a fox was guilty. But it could be the fox is checking out if hares have been leaving leverets around again. Or that s/he can smell my rabbits through the rabbit room ventilation - though luckily there's no way in there.

I know they eat mice and such, and figure this is why they haven't decimated our rabbit population. Your leveret sounds like the victim of a cat- our cats always left 'parts' like that after feeding.

No doubt about that! When I live-trapped all those mice last year I figured it would benefit the food chain more than killing and disposing of them in the trash. The strong would persist :o)

Argh. Dammit. It may be routine in the wild, but it's no less terrible for that, with an innocent life snuffed out.

I had the misfortune to be out rabbiteering once, back at the original location, when some of the farmer's dogs appeared in the meadow.. dammit, it's difficult to forget that piercing scream.

*sigh*

Rabbits make a haunting sound when attacked. When The Huntress caught one, it was that sound that brought me to where she had brought it down or I would not have known what she had done. I then had to get it away from her (easy enough as she was as surprised as the rabbit) but bunny did not survive the shock.

Bad for the bunny, good for the fox. Maybe some fox kits got a good meal of fresh meat today.

That was close to my thought as this is 'cubbing' month. Someone needed a meal.

The fox in the illustrations forgot two very important things about rabbit stew:
1. You should put the rabbit out of its misery first, least it escape.
2. You shouldn't cook the rabbit in its clothing. Then all you will taste is laundry water (ick) when you serve the stew.

This reminds me of how Bugs Bunny is always popped into a pot unskinned and quite alive :o)

And who knows where those clothes have been!
